Event is really Growing Places
Green-fingered visitors flocked to a Stafford festival celebrating sowing and growing.
Sunday’s Spring Sowing Event was the first of its kind in the town and gave visitors of all ages the chance to learn how to grow their own plants and produce, no matter how small their growing space.
Transition Town Stafford organised the event in Market Square, with support from environmental groups, schools, businesses and Stafford Borough Council in a bid to inspire residents and bring the community together.
Activities included seed sowing, gardening tips and demonstrations as well as information on chicken rearing, composting and other lifestyle ideas.Schoolchildren competed in a “grow in what you throw” competition, bringing with them food plants they had grown in items usually recycled or discarded such as old kitchenware , footwear and even a handbag. Pupils from St Leonard’s Primary School and tots from Lollipops Montessori Nursery both won gardening prizes for their efforts.
Geoff Benn from Transition Town Stafford said: “The event was well attended, with people taking a real interest in the variety of stalls and events available.”
